Top Articles and PodcastsIt’s almost time to scratch another year off our list. Hopefully, most of you are ending this year better than you did last year and no doubt, better than the two years before.  As we wrap up this year, we’d like to share our top articles and podcasts; resources, and a few other goodies with you.

Healthy Workforce’s Top Articles in 2023

I’ve been blogging and writing articles since I started this company in 2011. While writing is NOT my favorite thing to do (I’m a better speaker than a writer), I still love writing my blog articles because as I write them, I pretend that I’m sitting in my kitchen having a conversation with someone about how to address bad behavior. Thinking this way “allows” me not to worry too much about grammar and being scholarly. It’s you and me having a chit-chat about bad behavior. Although, let me know if you ever see a typo or a blatant disregard for the English language!

The following represents our three most popular blog articles of the year. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

How to Reduce Interprofessional Conflict

In this article, I share three powerful strategies that can help us foster a more collaborative work culture and minimize those tensions that can sometimes occur between healthcare professionals. Tackling this growing issue not only benefits everyone involved, but also benefits patients. Which is what it’s all about, right?

Relational Rounding: The Key to Building High-Performing Teams

In this article, I provide a powerful strategy that can help healthcare leaders decrease negativity and develop a high-functioning, cohesive team. I discuss the importance of connecting with your employees through rounding, even amidst the constant challenges and competing priorities.

How to Create a Learning Culture for Unprepared New Graduate Nurses

In this article, I discuss how the pandemic has impacted nursing education, causing today’s new grads to be ill equipped and unprepared to manage the complexity of patient care. You’ll learn 3 strategies to help you acknowledge the frustrations of your experienced nurses while also creating a learning culture – not a blaming one.

Healthy Workforce’s top podcast episodes in 2023

Okay, okay. We just launched a podcast in July of 2023 and only post every other week. So, it’s too early to say what our top 3 are because there aren’t a lot to pick. However, it is still worth your time and ours to review and share.

Before I do, it’s important for you to know that I’ve been talking about launching a podcast for at least 3 years but didn’t commit to it. And when the end of another year came and went without being able to say, “Check out our most popular podcast episodes” …it felt like a mini failure – at least to me. I’m one of those people who think they can do more than they can. I over-commit and then realize that it’s humanly impossible for me to accomplish everything I say I’m going to accomplish. Just ask my team. I’m always stretching – sometimes to the point of almost breaking.

What made 2023 different is that I put other things aside that I wanted to do, hired a producer to help, and said goodbye to our biweekly Coffee & Conversations YouTube video series. I wasn’t going to let another year go by without scratching…” launch a podcast” off my list!

If you want others to trust you, you must first trust yourself. It starts with honoring the commitments you make to yourself.

So, although we’ve only had 12 episodes so far in 2023, here are the most downloaded:

Episode 2: Handling Tough Conversations through Compassionate Communication

In this episode, Diane Salter, bullying and incivility content expert at the Healthy Workforce Institute and Director of Surgical Services at a Pennsylvania hospital, talks about handling difficult conversations with employees, dealing with disruptive behavior, and creating a healthy work environment. Together, we provide strategies to approach difficult talks effectively and emphasize the importance of leaders not shying away from these conversations but embracing them for stronger relationships and team dynamics.

Episode 3: Fluff to Priority: Culture Change and Disruptive Behaviors in Healthcare

In this episode, Mitch Kusy, professor at the Graduate School of Leadership & Change at Antioch University, discusses the importance of culture change in organizations, specifically addressing disruptive behaviors. He shares three strategies for effective culture change initiatives, which include engaging others, using evidence from both internal and external sources, and clearly defining decision-making parameters.

Episode 5: The Key to Long-Term Employee Retention

In this episode, Cara Silletto, president and chief retention officer of Magnet Culture, shares her insights on employee retention challenges and well-being strategies for the workplace. She explains how to apply practical solutions for retention, including improving the new hire experience, ongoing team building, and using the platinum rule of customized appreciation.

And, my favorite – the teaser episode where I talk about why coffee. It’s one of my favorite memories.
